Scientific and technical support

The National Focal Point Biodiversity executes a number of scientific and technical tasks in support of a policy benefitting the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

In 2003 we concluded the compilation of a first exhaustive inventory of the biodiversity of our country, Biodiversity in Belgium. The book not only served to raise the awareness on biodiversity in many fields, but is a state of knowledge that supplies the basis for numerous policy documents that propose measures and actions.

We supply the thematic focal point for the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This advisory organ supports the convention by analysing information on relevant subjects, and prepares recommendations for decisions by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention.

The National Focal Point further supplies scientific advice on documents, project and other initiatives, on request by Belgian as well as European and international actors, amongst which the Convention itself.
