Participation of Dr Luc Janssens de Bisthoven to the OECD workshop entitled 'Biodiversity and Development: Mainstreaming and Managing for Results'

The crucial role that biodiversity and ecosystem services play in meeting development objectives, including poverty reduction, and ensuring long term sustainable economic growth, is increasingly recognised across the relevant policy communities. For example, the need to mainstream biodiversity across all sectors of the economy features prominently in the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. And, importantly, the Sustainable Development Goals proposed as part of the post-2015 United Nations development agenda currently include two goals on marine and terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Despite increasing attention at the international level, enhanced national and local action on the ground is needed to achieve real results in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and to deliver these as a central part of country-led development strategies, plans and policies.

The objective of this Workshop is to bring together government practitioners and experts, from both the biodiversity and development communities, to share experience and insights on the key opportunities and challenges to mainstream biodiversity into development policies and planning and into development co-operation. The Workshop will provide a platform for discussion on the following key themes:

• Recent country experience and efforts on mainstreaming biodiversity into development objectives and into development co-operation;
• Approaches and partnerships to mainstream biodiversity at local and sectoral level;
• Insights, challenges and opportunities to manage for better results.

Finally, the Workshop will aim to identify key areas where further analytical work and dialogue is needed to strengthen the capacity of providers of development co-operation and partner countries to mainstream biodiversity into development policy.
