PhD student co-supervised by CEBioS wins award at KUL Sustainability Day 2017
At the KU Leuven Sustainability Day 2017, PhD student Els De Keyzer won the Sustainable Globe Award with her poster Sustainable fisheries in Africa: genomics and stakeholder involvement in Lake Tanganyika sardine fisheries.

Els recently started her PhD within the Laboratory of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Genomics at KU Leuven. Her project aims to increase biological understanding and monitoring capacity regarding the sardine stocks in Lake Tanganyika, regionally crucial in terms of food and livelihood. A combination of modern genomic methods and stakeholder knowledge/perception can inform science-based and well-supported management options.
The research is funded by a VLIR-VLADOC fellowship and co-supervised by the Centre de Recherche en Hydrobiologie (CRH)-Uvira (D.R.Congo) and the CEBioS programme at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, and carried out in collaboration with the Ichthyology Section of the Royal Museum for Central Africa.
