CEBioS stand at Europe Day - 9 May 2015

On May 9th 2015, Europe Day, Anne-Julie Rochette, Maarten Vanhove and Luc Janssens de Bisthoven presented the CEBioS programme at the Esplanade of the European Parliament.

A Development Village was installed there, in the framework of the European Year for Development 2015. The three CEBioS scientists explained the public about the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services in developing countries. Our programme and its objectives were also illustrated, highlighting e.g. the importance of policy work, awareness raising among stakeholders and the general public, and scientific capacity building.

A terrarium with several species of African flower chafers (cetoniine beetles) provided a living display of the role of insects in ecosystems (with thanks to F. De Block from the RBINS vivarium). While hence also making publicity for the Museum's exhibitions, we wanted to inform the public of the activities the RBINS undertakes in relation to biodiversity and development cooperation, through the activities of CEBioS and other teams.

Our stand was located next to that of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, demonstrating mainly the RMCA's ichthyological work. Together, both stands provided a good illustration of biodiversity-related capacity building.
