CEBioS participation at the 2nd expert meeting on elaboration of options for synergies among biodiversity-related Multilateral Environmental Agreements
Han de Koeijer, member of CEBioS and Belgian CHM National focal point, participated in the second multi-stakeholder expert meeting on elaboration of options for synergies among biodiversity-related Multilateral Environmental Agreements. The meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 13 to 15 May 2015.
The meeting was convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Division of Environmental Law and Conventions (DELC), as part of a project on “Improving the effectiveness of and cooperation among the biodiversity related Conventions and exploring opportunities for further synergies”.
The purpose of this Multi-Stakeholder Expert Meeting was to elaborate and refine options for enhancing synergies across the seven major biodiversity related Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) at the global level; in particular with respect to the role of UNEP in supporting the coherent implementation of MEAs.

The meeting utilized the output from the "First multi-stakeholder expert meeting on elaboration of options for enhancing synergies across the six major biodiversity related MEAs", inputs from existing efforts to enhance cooperation across MEAs and the experiences and expertise of national, regional and international level experts.
The project “Improving the effectiveness of and cooperation among biodiversity-related conventions and exploring opportunities for further synergies” aims to address the mandate from the UNEP Governing Council, and to help address the decisions on related issues from the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) of the biodiversity-related MEAs. It is exploring options for further synergies at all levels of the seven major biodiversity-related MEAs, with a view to improvements in efficiency and effectiveness through enhanced coordination and cooperation.
Participants included representatives of national governments, the relevant Convention secretariats, international and regional organizations, as well as experts in MEAs, MEA synergies and aspects of implementation.
