The mandated functions of IPBES include catalysing financial support for capacity-building activities “by providing a forum with conventional and potential sources of funding”. Aiming to develop the IPBES Capacity-building Forum as an effective arena for cooperation, IPBES is seeking to work with institutions that fund and/or themselves undertake relevant capacity building activities.
The aims of the meeting were to promote dialogue amongst receivers, implementers and funders of capacity-building (CB) activities, with the aim of: exploring opportunities for cooperation on aligned investments in capacity-building needs; furthering partnerships for piloting and delivering the IPBES capacity-building programme; and planning further action, including preparation for future meetings of the forum.
The next steps are the following:
- Keep priority capacity building needs under review (i.e. based on assessment findings).
- Pilot the fellowship, exchange and training programme
- Develop the matchmaking role of IPBES.
It will also be important to develop a business model, governance, pilot programme and a plan on matchmaking.
