The Secretary General of the CBD (“Convention on Biological Diversity”) announced a series of high-impact events for biodiversity.
Biodiversity preservation is now more widely embraced in the political, economic and public domains. This was made possible by the following events, among others:
- the Nature Champions Summit hosted by Canada in late April,
- the launch of the IPBES’ Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services report,
- the G7 Environment Ministers Meeting on biodiversity and climate change hosted by France,
- the OECD report “Biodiversity: Finance and the Economic and Business Case for Action”, as well as the WWF France and AXA report “Into the Wild - Integrating Nature Into Investment Strategies”, presented in the context of G7.
Read this document for more information about these events.
Additional milestone events ahead will provide the opportunity to amplify the new narrative on biodiversity, leverage the increased engagement among various actors, and indeed mobilize an inclusive and catalytic movement for change, as mandated by CBD Parties at COP 14. These include:
- the Trondheim Conference on the post-2020 process for the Global Biodiversity Framework in July 2019 in Norway,
- the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit in September 2019, which includes a working track on nature-based solutions,
- the IUCN World Conservation Congress in June 2020 in France,
- and the Nature Summit to be hosted by the General Assembly of the United Nations at Heads of State and Government level in September 2020 in New York.
