  • "Depression: Let’s Talk!" (World Health Day, 07.04.2017)

Today on World Health Day, the world is focusing on the issue of depression, which has emerged as a major health problem, affecting over 300 million people every year. We now know that mental health is affected by a range of biological, socioeconomic and environmental factors. Increasing people’s engagement with nature and biodiversity can contribute to addressing this illness. American non-fiction author and journalist Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods, released over a decade ago, gave us a compelling account of the rise of “nature deficit disorder” among children, resulting from decreased exposure to the outdoors. More recent studies have shown that contact with nature can have a wide variety of beneficial effects on humans. These include positive effects on cognitive abilities and mental restoration from stress and health.

  • "Stop the Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds" (World Migratory Bird Day, 10 May 2016)

As a vital part of biodiversity, migratory birds play key functions in the interconnected systems that keep nature healthy, including seed dispersal of plants for human and livestock consumption, ecosystem restoration and pest regulation, in addition to the important cultural, aesthetic and economic roles they play in the lives of people worldwide.

Yet despite this, incredible numbers of birds are being lost each year, as a result of illegal killing, taking and trade. While the motives behind these illicit activities are various, they are taking a devastating toll. Millions of birds are being killed each year. These numbers are completely unsustainable, and when placed alongside other pressures, such as habitat loss and climate change, many once common species are facing the very real and distinct threat of extinction.

The theme of this year's Green Week, the biggest annual conference on European environment policy, is "Nature – our health, our wealth". We expect about 8-9 sessions presenting Green Infrastructure examples and policies to illustrate various relevant topics. One session, " Jobs and growth through Green Infrastructure" will explicitly show how green infrastructure contributes to economic development and job creation.

A number of initiatives will be presented to illustrate the opportunities and challenges of investing in green instead of grey infrastructure. How can investing in green infrastructure create and maintain both high-skilled and low-skilled jobs? What is the role of innovation? What new markets can emerge, in particular for SMEs? What are the benefits for the low-carbon economy? More information on http://ec.europa.eu/environment/greenweek/

  • Africa: Building on Growth

This new century is seeing a dramatic economic turnaround in Africa’s fortunes, with six of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies today in sub-Saharan Africa. If Africa is to remain a growth region, what policies should its governments and private sector investors pursue? Is Trade a mechanism for regional integration – are developing countries’ companies regional enough? What is the role of business and industry in development efforts? What footprints do the European businesses leave in the developing world and do they? What social and environmental footprints do businesses generally leave in Africa and is the promotion of green and social working practices common to these companies‘ CSR strategies? Can education and health policies support African economical growth

  • Beyond Enforcement: The role of communities in tackling illegal wildlife trade

Alarming rises in illegal wildlife trade over the last decade show that tougher law enforcement is not enough to stop poachers from devastating populations of iconic or endangered species. However, the trend towards increasingly militarised law enforcement can harm or alienate the communities who live alongside wildlife and have real power to protect it.

A recent international symposium organised by IUCN’s Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group, IIED, TRAFFIC and partners discussed the incentives and governance structures needed to effectively engage local people in wildlife conservation. Local people must be allowed to benefit from conservation efforts and be supported by responsive, efficient law enforcement agencies as equal partners in the fight against wildlife crime.

This event is organised in light of the recent international and regional inter-governmental conferences on illegal wildlife trade and forthcoming CITES CoP17.

The aim is to raise awareness amongst European policy makers as to current imbalance in attention to different policy options for tackling illegal wildlife trade; highlight findings on the limits to a purely enforcement-led approach and present case studies from Africa showcasing effective approaches to community engagement in combating illegal wildlife trade; and foster a dialogue between European policy-makers, international conservation and development organisation, and African practitioners about the lessons learned from community engagement and the policy requirements to support more effective approaches.

  • BiodiversityKnowledge First Conference

The conference aims to introduce and discuss broadly the approach of designing a Network of Knowledge (NoK) approach in the area of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Europe. At the heart of it is engaging different knowledge hubs and identify their interests when getting involved.
The focus of the conference will be on identifying solutions and options for the NoK and identify steps to create a broad community of interest with it. For a detailed discussion, the project team will provide a green paper as basis prior to the conference. To back this with a practical perspective, the conference will also introduce the demonstration cases of the project that will test the processes of the NoK over the next year.
On the last day, the conference will also discuss the European input into IPBES and other international developments.

  • Celebration of the International Day of Biodiversity 2008

    Biodiversity and Agriculture - 22 May 2008

Agriculture is a key example of how human activities have profound impacts on the ecosystems of our planet. This year’s theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD), “Biodiversity and Agriculture,” seeks to highlight the importance of sustainable agriculture not only to preserve biodiversity, but also to ensure that we will be able to feed the world, maintain agricultural livelihoods, and enhance human well being into the 21st century and beyond.

Different activities will be organised in Belgium to commemorate this day. The CBD National Focal Point will issue a press release compilling the list of the events and gather all relevant information on the CHM website.

A major debate on the theme 'No Agriculture without Biodiversity' will be organised during the "Foire de Libramont" on Saturday 26 July (PM).

    What is EKLIPSE?

EKLIPSE is an EU-funded project that started in February 2016. The project aims to establish a robust and flexible long-term mechanism for policy support on issues related to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, communicating and engaging a wide set of knowledge holders in its work and ensuring tailor-made outreach of results – to knowledge requesters and to society more broadly.

The success of EKLIPSE and its resulting mechanism is in everyone’s hands: the ‘requesters’ who need to know what knowledge is out there to answer their policy or societal needs; the knowledge holders (be they scientists of other citizens) who want their knowledge to mean something; and the extensive networks working on biodiversity and ecosystem services who have the enthusiasm and knowledge to make the mechanism work in the long term.

  • Exploring the impact of climate change on the Belgian development cooperation: use & design of scenarios

presented by Dr. Jean Hugé and Prof. Thomas Block from UGent

Scenarios allow to explore possible futures and stimulate creative out-of-the box thinking. Climate change will impact the Belgian development cooperation, both directly (influencing development trajectories in our partner countries) and indirectly (through the dynamics of the international climate policy architecture). However, many uncertainties remain regarding what impacts to expect and how to deal with these changes. During this seminar, we will introduce the diversity of use and the design of scenarios, and develop explorative scenarios regarding the impact of climate change on the Belgian development cooperation.

  • Financing and biopiracy : The challenges of the next UN Biodiversity Summit (COP11, India)

    PRESENTATION

Biodiversity represents our most valuable natural heritage and its conservation is one of our most urgent challenges. Beyond its immaterial value, biodiversity plays a vital role for human beings. Water purification, oxygen and carbon recycling, soil fertility, food production, drugs development, and general wealth protection are all examples of benefits provided freely by a healthy biodiversity. Yet human activities and our development choices in particular in the last 50 years have very often led to irreversible loss.

Biodiversity services are provided for free but their loss has a cost - a huge one: around 50 billion euros a year and up to 14.000 billions euros by 2050. Biodiversity erosion is particularly alarming in developing countries with the constant plunder of their natural richness and corollary the exploitative appropriation of indigenous forms of traditional knowledge, the so-called biopiracy.

In 2010, the COP10 on Biodiversity in Nagoya (Japan) agreed on a long-awaited Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) aiming at putting an end to biopiracy. This new legal instrument was a step forward, yet the whole issue of resource mobilisation for biodiversity protection was left aside.

In a few weeks time, in October 2012, the COP11 in Hyderabad (India) will have to look at the best way to implement the ABS Protocol and turn it into a successful and efficient tool against biopiracy. In addition the international community is called upon by several civil society organisations to deliver on resource mobilisation and innovative sources of financing for biodiversity protection before it is too late.

At Hyderabad, how will the challenge of fighting against biopiracy be tackled? Will measures on resource mobilisation live up to the high expectations?

About GYBN: Building a global youth coalition to halt the loss of Biodiversity!
GYBN’ vision is to create a global platform that will enable young environmentalists from all parts of the world to connect in order to join forces for the protection of biological diversity on our planet. GYBN also aims to become the international coordination platform for youth participation in the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity) and is committed to bring the opinions and positions of youth into the negotiations and make their collective voice heard. The establishment of GYBN has been prepared by an interim steering committee, consisting of young people from thirteen countries, which was formed shortly after CBD COP10 in October 2010. GYBN is officially supported by the CBD secretariat.

About the GYBN Kick-Off meeting: 35 participants, 7 days, 1 goal
The GYBN Kick-Off meeting will be hosted by NAJU (German Youth Association for the Protection of Nature) from August 21st to 27th in Berlin, Germany, and is organized in close coordination with the GYBN interim steering committee. Among others, the six-day conference will feature capacity building sessions and policy briefings on the CBD and the main issues on the agenda of COP11. Furthermore numerous workshops on topics like lobbying, organizing creative actions and campaigns as well as press- and public relations will be offered. However, the emphasis of the conference will lie on the establishment of GYBN and the preparation of youth participation at COP11. For this purpose participants will take part in a so called “Future Workshop” session and determine the structure, mandate and coordination etc. of GYBN and develop plans and political targets for meaningful youth participation at COP11.

  • Genetisch onderzoek onthult twee zeldzame Zwarte populieren in Affligem

  • Green Infrastructure Futures: from planning to delivery

The Mersey Forest, with the national Green Infrastructure Partnership, would like to invite you to a conference "Green Infrastructure Futures: from planning to delivery".

This high profile conference brings together leading experts from academia, the public and private sectors, and beyond to take stock of what has been achieved during the last 10 years of green infrastructure planning, and to consider where next for green infrastructure in north west England and beyond.

Confirmed speakers include: Paul Nolan OBE, Director, The Mersey Forest; Prof John Handley OBE, University of Manchester; Martin Moss, Senior Advisor, Natural England; John Flaherty, Executive Director Place, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council; Julia Thrift, Green Infrastructure Partnership and TCPA.

Over the last ten years, the innovative green infrastructure planning in north west England has been recognised at both UK and EU levels. There has also been a growing understanding in the way that green infrastructure can contribute to a range of benefits to society - including making places more economically attractive; mitigating the effects of climate change; and helping people live healthy, active lives. Now, with public sector funding for green infrastructure in England facing dramatic cuts, there is an opportunity to bring in funding, expertise and commitment to green infrastructure from a range of new sources.

The conference will be of interest to anyone who is keen to learn and contribute new ideas to ensure green infrastructure is part of the future success of north west England, the UK, and the EU. Please pass on this message to any of your contacts as relevant.

We are grateful to the conference supporters: The Mersey Forest; Green Infrastructure Partnership; the EU Interreg IVB GIFT-T! project; Atlantic Gateway Parklands; Peel Group; TCPA.

We are grateful to the conference supporters: The Mersey Forest; Green Infrastructure Partnership; the EU Interreg IVB GIFT-T! project; Atlantic Gateway Parklands; Peel Group; TCPA.

  • Green Infrastructure: A European Success Story

Green Infrastructure enables nature to deliver a range of benefits to ecosystems and people, including for health and quality of life. They are key to driving jobs and growth while tackling our environmental challenges head on. Many success cases demonstrate the value of investing in Green Infrastructure. That is why the European Commission in 2013 adopted a strategy promoting Green Infrastructure.

In order to take stock of its implementation, and renew the political commitment of the different actors involved, the European Commission, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), in cooperation with Intergroups from the European Parliament, are co-organising a conference on "Green Infrastructure: A European success story" on 5 May 2015.

  • Healthy oceans, healthy planet - World Oceans Day, 8 June 2016

The oceans have long captured the hearts and minds of people around the world. The mysteries of its depths, the wonder of its creatures and the power of its waves have fed our curiosity and imagination since ancient times. The oceans have played an essential role in human history, connecting peoples, driving trade and crafting our various cultures. We now also understand how important the oceans are to human survival, well-being and sustainable development.

The overall importance of the oceans cannot be understated. More than four billion people rely on fish for a substantial share of their protein intake. The oceans and the life therein are critical to the healthy functioning of the planet, as the oceans support essential biogeochemical processes, supplying, for example, half of the oxygen we breathe. Oceans contain some 250,000 known species and yet many more remain to be discovered - at least two thirds of the word’s marine species are still unidentified. The many species in our oceans also provides a number of medicines and biochemicals. Clearly, planetary well-being, as well as the health, wealth and survival of humans are closely intertwined with the health of the oceans.

Relevance: This conference stems from the observation that the interactions between, and the relative contributions, of different types of human activities have unclear contributions on current and future biodiversity loss unclear for most researchers. This is largely due to the fact that very few publications compare the effects of these different activities in the same model, and since all these activities have been growing exponentially since 1850, they all correlate well with the quantifications of biodiversity loss.

  • In Loving Memory of Frédéric Chemay (1961-2014)
It is with deep sadness that the Belgian biodiversity community has learned of the passing of Frédéric Chemay in the night of 30th September 2014. He was 53.

As Hubert Reeves ever said, “Regarder “loin”, c’est regarder “tôt”” (Looking far is anticipating). This quote seems to have been written for Frédéric. Those who knew him will indeed remember him for his foresight in environmental issues and for always keeping his mind alert. He never stopped developing new projects, opening up new areas for debate and action.

He will also be remembered by his colleagues for his “struggling” with computers, his very particular sense of order and punctuality, his kindness and his good laughs.

We all will keep in mind his enthusiasm and untiring dedication to the environment for so many years.

Forests are much more than trees. As the most biologically-diverse ecosystems on land, forests are home to more than 80 per cent of the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. They provide shelter, jobs and security for forest-dependent communities, with approximately 1.6 billion people relying on forest resources for their livelihoods, with most of them (1.2 billion) using trees on farms to generate food and cash.

  • International day for biodiversity 2008

A major debate on 'Biodiversity and Agriculture' will be organised during the "Foire de Libramont" end of July.

  • Keep Nature Alive - Take action!

In Europe, vital laws protect our most precious nature. Our wildlife and most valued natural places all depend on these rules. Sadly, right now the European Commission is considering undermining these laws, undoing years of progress. The European Commission is asking for our opinion and now is the time to make our voices heard. The Commission’s consultation asks several questions and here we have suggested the answers that best protect nature. We must act now and say that we want these laws to be defended and not weakened.

  • MUMM-RBINS: Monitoring of the effects of windmills at sea: report 2012

With the installation of already 91 windmills, the first two offshore wind farms on the Thorntonbank (C-Power project) and the Blighbank (Belwind project) are nearing completion. Since such major constructions are known to affect the marine environment, a mandatory monitoring programme keeps a close eye on possible major impacts. This year’s integrated report, written by the Management Unit of the Mathematical Model of the North Sea (of the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences), in cooperation with the Marine Biology Research Group (UGent), INBO and ILVO, confirms wind farms to be hotspots for biodiversity and to be affecting seabirds and marine mammals.

  • Making use of climate services to improve development projects and programmes

Various initiatives related to climate services are emerging in many developing countries. A climate service can be defined as “a decision aide derived from climate information that assists individuals and organizations in society to make improved ex-ante decision-making” (A. Tall, 2013, “What do we mean by climate services”, Bulletin of the WMO, vol. 62). These initiatives aim at facilitating the adaptation of multiple sectors, including agriculture. This seminar will discuss the concept of climate services and provide an overview of the opportunities that climate services can offer to improve development projects and programmes.

The conference is being organised under the auspices of ECOSPHERE (European Centre on Sustainable Policies on Human and Environmental Rights), and the Belgian Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and the Environment.

The conference will start by reviewing some of Marc’s major accomplishments with many of the people with whom Marc worked during his career. We will then discuss the Aarhus Convention – its successes and the challenges still ahead in achieving the vision of Marc and its other drafters. The final session will take a broader look at the field of human rights and the environment.

  • Mineral Extraction versus Ecology

After a workshop organised 27 November 2015 and a series of excursions to different types of raw materials extraction conducted this year, the ad-hoc working group observed that former or reclaimed mining sites regain valuable ecological functions and may even attain a higher level of biodiversity than the original lands before mining. Multiple former extraction sites are transformed into Natura 2000 or other protected sites, or even are becoming new wilderness areas. The ad-hoc working group has concluded that mining and ecology should become allies and agreed to the organisation of a symposium, with the intention to promote a better understanding of the mutual interests by the industry and the conservationists and at informing a wider audience.

  • New publication: Invasive alien predator causes rapid declines of native European ladybirds.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are recognized as major drivers of biodiversity loss, but few causal relationships between IAS and species declines have been documented. In this study, authors compared the distribution (Belgium and Britain) and abundance (Belgium, Britain and Switzerland) of formerly common and widespread native ladybirds before and after the arrival of Harmonia axyridis, a globally rapidly expanding IAS.

  • OCEANS The Future of the Blue Planet

Oceans and seas are of crucial importance to the EU. Healthy oceans are home to a very rich biodiversity, act as climate-regulators, offer food security and contribute to the European economy, offering jobs to nearly 3.5 million people.

However, they are under increasing pressure from over-fishing, coastal eutrophication, marine litter and climate change. They need to be managed sustainably in order to conserve the fragile marine ecosystems.

  • OneHealth/EcoHealth survey - integrated health frameworks

The importance of human health interlinkages with nature and the environment in general has gained attention in science, policy and society at large. The recent (2015) State of Knowledge review of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) addresses the diversity and complexity of the interlinkage between biodiversity and human health and the opportunities and challenges that go with it. In order to better address all (or subsets of) interrelated aspects in an integrated/holistic manner, several integrative frameworks were developed over time.
