In November 1999, a colloquium 'Belgium and the Convention on Biological Diversity. A state of the art' was held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. It was obvious that our country had a great potential for the implementation of the Convention, but the meeting also showed that the CBD was completely lacking on the political agenda. Since then, some interesting changes occurred both at the organisational and content levels.

The organisational level. Summarised information is provided on the functioning of the Steering Committee 'Biodiversity Convention', the new Biodiversity Platform financed by the OSTC, the contribution of several federal ministries and the elaboration of a Federal Plan for Sustainable Development (2000-2004).

The content level. A brief overview of thematic CBD issues and the way they have been addressed during the past few years is given. The participation of stakeholders is mentioned.

As a conclusion, it is emphasized that commitment of all sectors, and in particular of the private sector, will be of crucial importance to meet the needs of the third objective of the Convention, especially regarding transfer of technology and cooperation. A plea is given to raise the profile of 'biodiversity' higher on the political agenda.
