News UNECE / FAO Launch PhD Thesis Award on Forest Management

21 March 2011: The Forestry and Timber section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) launched a PhD Thesis Award to promote scientific research on sustainable forest management.

A prize of US$10,000 will be awarded to the best PhD thesis providing new data and insights into forest management and the balancing of forest conservation, forest productivity and social wellbeing. The winning thesis may touch upon new tools and strategies to face compelling problems and challenges such as climate change, pests and diseases, fire management, and institutional barriers. The results must be applicable to the sustainable management of forests in the UNECE region.

The award is open for applications until 15 June 2011. The award ceremony will take place in Antalya, Turkey, at the next meeting of the UNECE Timber Committee and the FAO European Forestry Commission, from 10-14 October 2011, when the winner will be invited to present the thesis as a contribution to the International Year of Forests.
