The Belgian Biodiversity Platform is the information and communications hub on biodiversity science and research in Belgium. It gives privileged access to primary biodiversity data and biodiversity research information. It encourages interdisciplinary cooperation among scientists and serves as an interface between researchers and science policy. The tasks of the Belgian Biodiversity Platform include
- Animating thematic forums and organizes events on topical issues in biodiversity research to encourage communication and discussion between scientists, policy makers and stakeholders; they act as catalysts for the integration of science into biodiversity conservation and policy and as kernel for projects on specific problems related to the management and conservation of biodiversity;
- Analysing scientific research with a view to contribute to the development of an effective and appropriate science policy;
- acting as interface between researchers and Belgian and international science policy organizations. As such, the platform is the secretariat of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) and the National committee of the international biodiversity programme DIVERSITAS.
Future actions:
- Propose creative solutions to install a mechanism and institutional arrangements aiming to simplify procedures and ensure participation;
- Assess the positive and negative impacts of socio-cultural and economic factors;
- Develop training courses and materials to help:
- Researchers (communication more effective of the results and process of their research)
- Decision-makers (using and requesting scientific advice (e.g. how to ask the right questions) and identification of suitable sources of information)
- Encourage secondments from universities and scientific institutions, into government;
