Full text of the objective 4d.3 "Prevent GM fishes to threatening fishes biodiversity and populations*" from the National Strategy

Not applicable in the Brussels Capital Region.

Federal:

No GM fishes are presently authorized in the EU . Measures taken to avoid introduction of GM fishes : 1) at the level of import and of inspection in BE ( control by AFSCA and by FPS Health ) : import sheets mention the interdiction of import of GM fishes ; custumors and controllers are aware to suspect fluorescent fishes ; 2) at the level of fish shops : information sheet prepared by FPS . Besides , federal experts participate to scientific meetings on risk assessment studies and guidance directives elaboration for risk assessment of GM fishes ( still a lot of lack of knowledge ) .

Future actions:

• Take drastic measures to prevent GM varieties from escaping into the wild;
• Avoid and study the consequences of interbreeding and competitive behaviour with wild relatives;
• Give specific attention to side effects to of genetic manipulations aimed at increasing the size of commercial species.
