Full text of the objective 4a.1 "Identify good practices involving sustainable use of biodiversity" from the National Strategy

Flanders:

Code of good practices: for nature with guidelines for the management of protected vegetation types, for agricultural uses based upon integration of environmental issues. The Flemish forest policy is based upon multifunctional and sustainable forestry and applied through development of a management vision consisting of:

  • specific and concrete guidelines for a close-to-nature forest management;
  • a framework to assess the forest functions;
  • a method for quality control.

Incentives are provided for the use of criteria for sustainable forest management in the management planning and implementation. Promotion of organised and controlled hunting in Wildlife Management Units (WMU) so that they can act as joint manager of the open space. Principes, criteria and indicators are being developed to evaluate the sustainability of the implementation and hunting plans and to review policies.

  • MINA-project 22 Zorg voor natuur: Uitwerking onderdeel natuur van code goede landbouwpraktijkencodes, opstellen van goede praktijk voor diverse visserijdisciplines, actualisering en uitbreiding code goede natuurpraktijk
  • MR276 Ecologische inpassing van de binnenvisserij: Samen met de vertegenwoordigers van verschillende hengeldisciplines wordt gewerkt aan codes van goede praktijk.

Brussels:

Sustainable forest management: FSC Certification
Guidelines of "ecological management" in urban grees spaces

Walloon Region:

  • About 47% of the forest area in Wallonia is ecocertified under the PEFC scheme. This process includes an updated regional plan to improve the forest management and practices, and commitments for the owners and managers participating to the process. (available on www.pefc.be) ; internal and external audit are scheduled every year.
  • The "Circulaire relative aux aménagements dans les forêts soumises au régime forestier" is a normative tool for the management planning in public forests. At this stage, about half of the forest area is covered by new plans following this circulaire. The other half should be covered in the next 3 years.
  • En vue de transposer la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau, la Région wallonne a adopté le Code de l'eau (27 mai 2004). Un de ses objectifs est de « prévenir toute dégradation supplémentaire, de préserver et d'améliorer l'état des écosystèmes aquatiques ainsi que, en ce qui concerne leurs besoins en eau, des écosystèmes terrestres et des zones humides qui en dépendent directement ».
  • Les nouvelles mesures agri-environnementales prévoient des mesures d'incitations pour une meilleure prise en compte de la nature au niveau agricole (voir point 3.3).
  • L'opération fauchgfe tardif des bords de routes donne une série de conseils en vue de limiter l'impact négatif de l'entretien des bords de routes sur la biodiversité et même pour en améliorer la biodiversité.
  • Guide de bonnes pratique pour l'aménagement des carrières après exploitation

  • Make available good practices of sustainable use of biodiversity in Belgium in various area of activity (agriculture, fishery, biofuel cultures, fishery, forestry, hunting, tourism, etc.) available to the relevant sectors (i.e. via the CHM) and proactively inform about them. Identify, Compile and inform about the bad practices and lessons learnt;
