Brussels:
Effects of climate change are followed in the framework of the monitoring programs of flora and fauna. Due to some effects of climate change, forest management has already been adapted.
Walloon Region:
A working group on Forests and Climate change has been established recently in the Walloon Region. It is mainly scientific experts in climate change, in sylviculture and in pests management that are involved. The group plans to develop a synthesys document which would become the basis for an action plan. The working group has already identified the following categories of actions (either ongoing or planned) that will contribute to mitigate and adapt to climate change :
- Sylvicultural practices :
- Select species and origin according to climate change resistance criteria's
- Diversifiction at all levels : genes, species, ecosystems
- Protection of water : avoid drainage, ...
- Continuous cover
- Encourage quality timber production
- Encourage timber use in buildings
- An « early reaction system » in case of climate hazards (storms, droughts, ...) that could induce massive decay and pest outbreaks (such as bark beatles) is being implemented.
Future actions:
- To prevent or limit severe damage to the environment, society and economies, mitigation measures and adaptation strategies for affected systems must be developed at national, regional and local level18 (EEA, 2004).
- Identify threatened ecosystems (establishment of a specific national expert group climate / biodiversity / forests)
