Inland waters and water management
Water resources in Belgium are managed in the three separate regions, while some specific issues are dealt with at the national level (e.g. transport). A major obligation is the transposition of the EU Water Framework Directive into regional law. The basic institutional framework of the water policy in Flanders is described in the Decree on Integrated Water Policy of 2003, complemented by other environmental legislation. In Wallonia, the water legislation is included in the Book II of the « Walloon Environmental Code » adopted in 2004. In the Brussels Capital Region, the regional law for the transposition of the Water Framework Directive is being finalised.
