14-12-2001: Belgian Fauna and Alien Species
The Convention on Biological Diversity (Rio, 1992) is facing a considerable challenge for its implementation, since much remains to be discovered about biodiversity. In this context, the improvement of taxonomic knowledge and the development of scientific assessments are two priorities of the Convention.
The objective of this symposium was evaluate the current knowledge of the diversity of the Belgian fauna and of the observed trends. A special attention was given to the poorly-known groups and to exotic species. In order to produce such knowledge, the contribution of scientists is essential. However, naturalists associations and individual naturalists aslo gather high-quality information that has too often little opportunity to be valorised.
