Administrations

All matters related to environmental management and biodiversity conservation have been united in the Policy Domain Environment, Nature and Energy - LNE.

LNE is active in many fields, including policy making, the implementation of environmental legislation (including stemming from the European Union), the management of forests, parks, protected areas and agricultural land, integrated water management and environmental education. It has one directorate general and 11 divisions.

ANB - covering nature and forest conservation, management of green spaces, protected areas and ecological networks, species protection, and related legislation - has been nominated as Belgian Regional Focal Point for Flanders to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Public agencies

Three public agencies each deal with one specific environmental topic:

  • the Flemish Land Agency (VLM), responsible for sustainable land use planning,
  • the Flemish Environmental Agency (VMM), which monitors the quality of environment and supervises surface water quality. It  is also responsible for the compilation and publication of the Flanders Environment and Nature Report (MIRA),
  • the Flemish Public Waste Agency (OVAM), responsible for waste management and soil remediation in Flanders
