Rio+20, or the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), which will be held from 20 to 22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Taking place at the highest political level, including heads of state and government, the Rio+20 Conference aims at securing renewed political commitment for sustainable development and is set to focus on the ‘green economy’ and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
As the world is drawing closer to the Rio+20 Conference, this IES/IEEP Environmental Policy Forum will focus on discussing the need for and prospect of reforming the institutional framework for sustainable development. In particular, it will serve to present and discuss proposals made in the "Rio+20 Policy Brief: Transforming Governance and Institutions for a Planet under Pressure" prepared by the Earth System Governance Project, a core project of the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP). On the basis of this Policy Brief (available for download) to be launched at the Policy Forum to the Brussels community, the event is designed to advance the debate on the institutional framework for sustainable development in preparation for the Rio+20 Summit later in 2012. It will specifically discuss the appropriateness and feasibility of a range of options for institutional reform.
