Public lecture and debate: 'Can industrial logging and nature conservation be allies in Central Africa?'

As part of the European Conference of Tropical Ecology (6 to 10 Feb 2017), this public lecture aims to address whether industrial logging of tropical forests can be compatible with nature conservation, using case studies from Central Africa. Different points of view from researchers, conservationists and logging company representatives will be nicely illustrated in a set of short presentations at the interface between science, conservation and sustainable management of African forest resources. A debate with the audience will then be moderated by Dr Maaike De Ridder. The event will end by a short presentation by Dr Hans Beeckman of the xylarium (i.e. wood collection) from the Royal Museum of Central Africa and its interest for African forest management.

Prior to this public lecture, from 17:00, it will be possible to discover more than 100 scientific posters and to consult publications from our partners at the European Conference of Tropical Ecology (building D, close to the auditorium Q). This conference allows c. 400 scientists, experts in biodiversity and conservation, and students from 46 countries to meet during one week to better understand and protect tropical biodiversity.
