Making use of climate services to improve development projects and programmes
Various initiatives related to climate services are emerging in many developing countries. A climate service can be defined as “a decision aide derived from climate information that assists individuals and organizations in society to make improved ex-ante decision-making” (A. Tall, 2013, “What do we mean by climate services”, Bulletin of the WMO, vol. 62). These initiatives aim at facilitating the adaptation of multiple sectors, including agriculture. This seminar will discuss the concept of climate services and provide an overview of the opportunities that climate services can offer to improve development projects and programmes.

“The relevance of climate services for the development agenda” Philippe Roudier is a Research Officer at Agence Française de Développement and a specialist of climate and agriculture issues in developing countries. He is an engineer in water resources management and holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Economics from the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (Paris). Prior to his current position, he was a Disaster Modeller in the field of reinsurance and, before that, a Scientific Project Officer for the European Union (Climate Risk Unit). At the same time, he has also conducted various consultancy missions for NGOs and the United Nations. His research has been published in a dozen international journals and is incorporated in IPCC reports. |

“Using climate information to strengthen resilience in agriculture: A case study of the APTE-21 project in Burkina Faso” Marine Lugen is a Ph.D. Researcher at the Centre for Studies on Sustainable Development (Université Libre de Bruxelles / Free University of Brussels). Her research questions the role and the effects of climate services for climate change adaptation in developing countries. |
Practical:
There will be ample time for questions and discussion. The seminar will be held in English, but questions and discussion in Dutch or French are very welcome.
