Through the Belgian cooperation with support of the EU, the Kilombero and Lower Rufiji Wetlands Ecosystem and Management Project (KILORWEMP) was implemented during the period 2012 – 2018.
It had the Global Objective to contribute to a sustainable management of the wetlands ecosystems of the Kilombero Valley and Lower Rufiji so that its ecological balance is conserved, the local communities’ livelihoods are improved and economic development is sustained.
The project assisted the Tanzanian Government and stakeholders to strengthen environmental management systems in a flagship agricultural landscape and catchment area of Tanzania. This landscape is a wetland of international importance; it has been changing radically over the last 20 years, due to strong agriculture, settlements and infrastructure growth. The area is now also at the intersection of mining and hydropower development plans.
