Prof Sherbakov is a pioneer in molecular studies of endemic animal radiations in Lake Baikal. He has published on phylogenies of several Baikal endemics, including amphipods, snails, cottoid fish, and others. He has been collaborating with scientists form the Royal Belgian Institute of natural Sciences since about 25 years and is an expert in ancient lake speciation.
