A recent study reported by Ali Zakaria (from APGRC) et al confirms earlier suggestions that cowpea was first
introduced into Sudan from West African countries into western Sudan (Kordofan and Darfur regions). The present collection of Sudanese cowpea genetic resources, held by the APGRC, and which was obtained from South Kordofan, North Kordofan, Blue Nile, Northern and River Nile states as well as from Bahr Eljabel area in South Sudan, was compared with a collection obtained from the IITA using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. The study suggested low level of genetic diversity among Sudanese cowpea populations, agreeing with previous reports by several cowpea researchers who documented that cowpea in general has a narrow genetic base due to the result of a bottleneck induced by a single domestication event which involved in the origin of this crop. However, the genetic distances observed among the different ecological zones were relatively varied. As a result of that a Sudanese cowpea core collection is proposed be created from South Kordofan, River Nile and Bahr Eljabel germplasm.
