Welcome to the website of the Belgian National Focal Point to the Global Taxonomy Initiative

In implementing COP decision V/9, paragraph 4, Belgium designated in 2001 the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels as the National Focal Point to the Global Taxonomy Initiative. The Belgian GTI is part of the first specific objective of the CEBioS programme from the RBINS.

The overacting objective of Belgium’s GTI National Focal Point is to reduce the so-called taxonomic impediment that hinders the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The specific objective of the Belgian GTI is to help with the development of taxonomic and curatorial capacities in developing countries partner of the Belgian Cooperation. The aim is to strengthen the scientific knowledge base on biodiversity and on its linkages with ecosystem services and poverty reduction.
