Yemen seeks to maintain islands environment
SANA’A, April 07 (Saba)- The Ministry of Tourism and the General Authority for the Protection of the environment (GAPE) signed on Tuesday an agreement to set conditions and regulations of setting up tourist camps in islands.

The agreement includes controls and requirements for the set up of tents and camps in locations specified by the Ministry.
The agreement was signed by Director General of Tourism and Environment Adel Nasser Hassan and Director General of Natural Resources of the GAPE Abdullah Hamoud.
Upon the agreement, the Ministry is to provide tourist agencies with a list of specifications and locations suitable for camping. The agreement aims to protect wildlife and birds in the islands of the country.
Speaking to Saba, Tourism Ministry’s undersecretary for the Tourism Development Omar Ba Lghayth said that the agreement aims to maintain nature reserves and islands in Yemen.
He pointed out that this agreement comes within the framework of implementation of the government's plans to maintain environment.
The government has warned the marine environment was exposed to extensive destruction operations by foreign fishing vessels.
Yemen is just under 530,000 km2 in land area. Its territory includes over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra. It is the colony settlement for rare natural birds and plants and enjoy an important strategic location.
