The Quarry Life Award
The Quarry Life Award offers a unique opportunity to add true ecological and educational value to a mining environment. Quarries will open their doors from March to September 2012 to the selected participants. Best scientific projects will be rewarded with prizes from 1 500 euro to 30 000 euro.

A mining site provides a great variety of landscapes and habitats and presents low level of disturbance from human activities. HeidelbergCement is committed to managing biodiversity during and after extraction. In more than 1000 quarries and pits worldwide they strive to promote the exceptional local flora and fauna. They believe that research projects can raise the knowledge of the biological value of mining sites and thereby contribute to further protect and promote biodiversity.
The Quarry Life Awards offers a unique opportunity to add true ecological and educational value to a mining environment. Take a look at the following topics and let your creativity go to work.
Four project topics:
- Discover biodiversity in mining sites: Goal: increase the knowledge about biodiversity in the selected mining sites.
- Biodiversity and rehabilitation: Goal: promote biodiversity in quarry rehabilitation (nature protection, forestry, agriculture, recreation, housing areas…).
- Biodiversity and education: Goal: develop a concept for social activities focusing on mining and biodiversity (events, nature trails, cooperation with schools, NGOs, universities).
- Biodiversity management during extraction: Goal: optimize the biodiversity value of the quarry during the extraction period.
Students and researchers are invited to submit a two page project idea by 17th February 2012. The best project proposals in each country will then be selected. Selected projects can receive funds towards research costs. More information on the reward can be found on the "Quarry Life Award" site
