During COP13 in Cancun, Mexico the executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity awarded prices for the CHM Award to three countries each in the categories most significant progress in the "establishment" or "further development" of their national clearing-house mechanisms (CHM). The Belgian CHM was awarded the bronze award in the category "further development of their national clearing-house mechanisms". The Belgian CHM received this award, among others, for all the work they have done to promote technical and scientific cooperation in relation to the CBD.

Since 1999 the Belgian CHM has assisted developing countries to start their national CHM. The result of this work was that seven partner countries received a certificate during the award ceremony!

Background to the CHM Award

In decision XII/2 B, paragraph 15, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity requests the Executive Secretary to propose, in collaboration with the informal advisory committee to the clearing-house mechanism (CHM-IAC), a process to grant, at the 13th, 14th, 15th meetings of the Conference of the Parties, subject to the availability of resources, an award to the Parties that have made the most significant progress in the establishment or further development of their national clearing-house mechanisms.
