  • Stories of change: mainstreaming biodiversity and development. New publication available

    Publication by IIED, UNEP-WCMC

    Getting biodiversity concerns into the policies and plans of government ministries and private sector companies is a goal that can take many years to achieve. Huge amounts of energy and determination are needed to bring the right people together. These stories highlight where this has been done and a change is starting to be seen in Namibia, Uganda, Seychelles and Botswana. The stories cover working with mining companies, working with the media, working to draft legislation for tacking biopiracy, mainstreaming biodiversity in an urban context and the importance of building relationships with the right people.

  • CITES and UNEP support strengthening of wildlife laws

    According to the latest figures released by the National Legislation Project of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife and Flora (CITES), 88 countries and 13 dependent territories need to strengthen their legal frameworks for the effective implementation of CITES, including to combat illegal trade in wildlife.

    According to the latest OECD - DAC Peer Review, 'Belgium is making a laudable push to direct more development aid to the poorest countries, but to deliver on this it needs to set firm deadlines, make its aid programme more flexible, and should reverse a decline in overall aid'.

  • ZSL-EDGE Fellowship 2016 call is open

    The ZSL-EDGE Fellowship programme provides structured training to early-career conservation biologists to undertake an applied research or conservation project on a local EDGE species.

    The EDGE Fellowship programme is more than just a source of funding. In addition to receiving a grant of up to £10,000, EDGE Fellows attend two regional training courses; undertake online modules in relevant topics; and receive one-to-one support from a scientific advisor based at ZSL or a partner organisation.

  • First African Mountains Regional Forum

    The First African Mountains Regional Forum themed “Towards a Shared Mountain Agenda for Africa,” convened in Arusha, Tanzania, from 22-24 October 2014. The meeting was organized by the Albertine Rift Conservation Society and the Africa Mountain Partnership Champions Committee, in partnership with the East African Community, the UN Environment Programme, the Austrian Development Cooperation, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The meeting brought together over 100 participants representing, inter alia, government, academia, research institutions, intergovernmental organizations and civil society.

  • CHM training in Libreville, Gabon

    Klaas-Douwe B Dijkstra (Naturalis and Stellenbosch University) and colleague Viola Clausnitzer (Senckenberg Institute) have published “The Dragonflies and Damselflies of Eastern Africa: Handbook for all Odonata from Sudan to Zimbabwe.”  This handbook provides an unprecedented resource for freshwater biodiversity conservation in Africa. The book is published by the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Belgium) with support from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center (The Netherlands), JRS, and research funding by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany).

    The stimulation of international mobility and the attraction of researchers from abroad is one of the priorities of the European Research Area.

  • North South South Project (VLIR-UOS) - Integrated water management Lake Manyara

    Mission 7-12 December 2015 - Summary (CEBioS)

    This mission is in the framework of the North South South Project (VLIR-UOS) “Balancing water for biodiversity and socio-economic use in a changing climate: towards a Decision Support System for sustainable land and water use” in the lake Manyara region, Tanzania. Promotor is Prof. Luc Brendonck (KU Leuven). RBINS- CEBioS is involved as a partner in this project, together with KU Leuven (Prof. L. Brendonck), NM-AIST (Tanzania, Dr. Hans Komakech), UWC (S. Africa, Dr. Maryke Malan), UNZI (Zimbabwe, Dr. Tamuka Nhiwatiwa) and UGent (Prof. P. Boeckx). CEBioS was present with Luc Janssens de Bisthoven and Maarten Vanhove. This external project fits into the strategy of CEBioS, SO1 (knowledge), SO3 (awareness), S04 (Mainstreaming, policies) and SO5 (MRV) (see http://www.biodiv.be/cebios2/programme/strategic-objectives )

    By integrated research with complementary expertise from the different partners, scientific data will be generated and implemented in a Decision Support System for sustainable multisector water allocation in the Lake Manyara basin as a case study. As such we aim to contribute to the sustainable development of ecotourism and irrigation based agriculture in the basin, a model that is relevant in all partner countries. Researchers will be trained in aquatic ecology, hydrology, characterisation of land use change, soil erosion and decision support systems.

    The first day of this mission, the project partners came together at NM-AIST to make the last preparations for the multistakeholder workshop. The second day the partners drove to the Manyara sub-basin and visited the area. The next two days the multistakeholders workshop took place at premises kindly organised by the Belgian NGO TRIAS. Participants were given the opportunity to do a stakeholder’s analysis, a community mapping exercise, a problem tree, and a SWOT analysis. Each stakeholder also presented the own perspective on the lake Manyara socio-economic and environmental issues. In the afternoon of the second day TRIAS showed some interesting rural development projects North of Mto Wa Mbu (irrigation, bee hives, bananas). The workshop provided a very informative, multi-faceted and nuanced view on the Lake Manyara environmental problematics. It also created a space for lively interactions between the stakeholders for a better mutual understanding of conflicting issues.

    BIOPAMA (Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme), in collaboration with the Sustainability Challenge Foundation, is offering training on stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills, using the Mutual Gains Approach, to support efforts to better secure protected areas and key biodiversity areas in the Eastern and Southern African region.

  • 'Seeds for Restoration’ survey

    Restoring hundreds of millions of hectares of degraded forestlands will require billions of tree seeds and seedlings. In October, restoration practitioners are invited to take a survey to help identify current problems, good practices and recommendations for improving tree seed and seedling supply for forest and landscape restoration.

    Anne-Julie Rochette, a member of CEBioS, participated to the Conference "Africa Rising: Mobilising Biodiversity Data for Sustainable Development". The conference took place at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa, from 19 to 22 May 2015.

    On the 2nd of December 2014, the GBIF Secretariat launched the inaugural GBIF Ebbe Nielsen Challenge, hoping to inspire innovative applications of open-access biodiversity data by scientists, informaticians, data modelers, cartographers and other experts competing for a €20,000 first prize.
    For the past 12 years, GBIF has awarded the Ebbe Nielsen Prize to recognize outstanding contributions to biodiversity informatics while honouring the legacy of Ebbe Nielsen, one of the principal founders of GBIF.

  • 2015 GBIF Young Researchers Award: call for nominations

    The GBIF Governing Board has established the Young Researchers Award to foster innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by graduate students who are deploying GBIF-enabled data in master’s and doctoral studies. 

    Graduate students must be enrolled in a masters or doctoral programme at a university to be eligible to submit a research proposal to the GBIF Young Researcher Award programme.  Students must apply through and be nominated by a Head of Delegation (HoD) of a GBIF Participant country.     This year, the programme intends to make two awards of 4,000 Euros each, one to a master’s student and one to a doctoral student.

  • 2014 prizewinner of the Arsom competition is Léonard MUBALAMA KAKIRA

    Léonard MUBALAMA KAKIRA was awarded the 2014 prize in the Section of Natural and Medical Sciences of the Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences. His work was entitled 'Monitoring Law Enforcement Effort and Illegal Activity in Selected Protected Areas : Implications for Management and Conservation, Democratic Republic of Congo' and could be achieved thanks to the Archives of the former National Parks of Belgian Congo. This work was accomplished in the framework of project SYGIAP II, in 2006, in collaboration with CEBioS member, Dr François Muhashy Habiyaremye.

  • Pathfinder Award Call for Nominations

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) as well as WildArk- A Movement for the Wild present the inaugural Pathfinder Award.

    On 27 September, VVOB and CEBioS will welcome school inspectors from DRCongo at the RBINS for a half day about “L’éducation rencontre la biodiversité en R.D. Congo”.

  • ‘Matata effect’ denounces lack of valorisation of scientific results from authors from developing countries in international publications

    An article entitled "Academic capacity building: holding up a mirror" by Tom Van der Stocken, Jean Hugé, Evelien Deboelpaep, Maarten P. M. Vanhove, Luc Janssens de Bisthoven, and Nico Koedam has recently been published in the journal Scientometrics.

    Two CEBioS members (Luc Janssens de Bisthoven and Maarten Vanhove) contributed to this article.

    Abstract: "Based on our involvement in numerous consortia and projects with colleagues from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as on our extensive fieldwork experience in the global South, we have a shared concern on the actual inclusion of LMIC colleagues and institutions in coproducing highly valuable and policy-relevant science. While capacity building is stated as a major goal in various international research projects, especially when involving partners from LMICs or when focusing on research activities in these countries, we think that research from established groups and universities particularly in member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), receives more interest and respect on a disproportionate basis. With the present submission, we hope to feed the debate on the academic valorization of research performed by LMICs scholars. Though difficult to measure, this merits close scrutiny."
