Une étude de la biodiversité floristique des zones riveraines des lacs du Nord du Burundi a été
réalisée dans trois stations respectivement la zone lacustre côtière, la partie côtière marécageuse et la terre ferme. Les résultats mettent en évidence des indicateurs de la dégradation des qualités écologiques des lacs du Nord du Burundi. Nous citons le développement d’une végétation d’espèces envahissantes comme Lantana camara sur la petite île du lac Rwihinda, l’établissement d’Eichornea crassipes sur le lac Rweru et le développement d’un tapis flottant de Nymphaea lotus et Nymphaea caerulea. Une action restauratrice par la végétalisation des berges en privilégiant les espèces autochtones de la région de Bugesera est à entreprendre.
