On January to July, ABN (Association Burundaise pour la protection de la Nature) organizes waterbirdscounting since 2005. However, during 2009, as a result of lack of means both human and financial, the activity was interrupted. It is in January 2013 that the counting restarted due to training of new counters from ABN, OBPE (Office Burundais pour la Protection de l’Environnement), UB (Université du Burundi) by Nagy Szabolcs of Wetlands International. But lack of financial resources didn’t allow covering all the key sites selected in Burundi. Only a part of Rusizi National Park (NP) has been covered until 2015.
With the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary worldwide, the ABN has been supported by Wetlands International and a complete coverage occurred on our Burundi National territory.
The sites covered are: Lake Dogodogo (Cibitoke) , the northern lakes namely Cohoha, Rweru, Rwihinda (Kirundo) , Ruvubu NP (Cankuzo) , Kibira NP (Kayanza) , Malagarazi swamp (Rutana) Kigwena Natural Reserve Forest (KNF) (Rumonge).
The following lines show us different sites recounted and our successes for species counted despitebarriers such as rain and very few resources.
